2013 BOLOGNA TEATRO COMUNALE 250th ANNIVERSARY MNH
Condition: 2013 BOLOGNA TEATRO COMUNALE 250th ANNIVERSARY MNH
Description: The fire that in 1745 destroyed the Malvezzi Theatre in Bologna, generated the Phoenix that later became the Teatro Comunale. After the fire the city commissioned Antonio Bibiena, a member of the celebrated family of architects and theater set designers, the construction of a new opera house in stone in the Baroque style of the period. On 14 May 1763, the Municipal Theatre opened its doors to the public with the first performance of The triumph of Clelia by C. W. Gluck. Documents of the time reported that 1,500 people attended the inaugural event, the total population at that time was 70,000 inhabitants. Since then, the City has become famous for the high quality of its opera season and the fame of the artists who come from all over the world. The musical culture of Bologna is well known: many composers, including Mozart, studied at the Music Academy of Bologna; Rossini lived in the city for years and saw his work staged at the Teatro Comunale, Verdi worked in nearby Busseto and Sant'Agata In 1867 the first Italian performance of Don Carlo took place on the stage of Bibiena a few months after the premiere in Paris. When you think about it, the Comunale is actually older than La Scala. Exactly to the day of its opening, on 14 May 2013, the Italian Posts issued a stamp to commemorate the 250th birthday of the Comunale.

2013 ITALY COLA DI RIENZO STATUE MINT NEVER HINGED
Country: ITALY
Condition: 2013 ITALY COLA DI RIENZO STATUE MINT NEVER HINGED
Description: On 23 November 2013, Italy issued a € 0.70 stamp to celebrate Cola di Rienzo (1313-1354) 700th birthday. The stamp depicts a statue of the great reformist and patriot by Girolamo Masini (1877) that adorns the grounds of the Capitol in Rome. Born in Rome in a humble family, Cola (short for Nicola) took up his father’s name (Lorenzo, Rienzo for short) as was customary at the time. As a young man he studied as notary and had a great interest in history. He was appointed ambassador and visited the Pope at Avignon where the papal seat was. In 1347, he was the leader of an insurrection in Rome. The nobles left the city and Cola became the tribune of the new order which also affected the barons of Tuscany and Umbria. The poet Petrarch nicknamed him the new Romulus. His attempts to convince other regions and states to start to re-build Italy as a nation were not successful. At the same time he made stern efforts to undermine the temporal power of the Pope. In 1352 he was extradited from Prague and was taken to Avignon where he was put on trial for heresy and other serious charges. The jury consisting of three cardinals sentenced him to death. However, a new pontiff pardoned and released him and in 1354 sent him back to Rome giving him the title of senator. On his way Cola put together a sizable army and after re-entering Rome he took full control of the city. His draconian style added new enemies to the list resulting in an uprising ending with his assasination. His mutilated body was exposed on the steps of a popular church for two days and then burnt in the vicinity of Augustus mausoleum. After the reunification of Italy and the restoration of Rome as its capital in 1870, Cola di Rienzo’s legacy was credited as a great patriotic inspiration of the Risorgimento. Wagner’ opera, RIENZI is based on the life of the revolutionary Cola. Even Verdi considered the potential of an opera based on the life of the patriot Cola.

Condition: MEDICINE NOBEL PRIZE LAUREATE LEVI-MONTALCINI ITALY 2013 MNH
Description: Italian neurologist and 1986 Nobel Laureate for Medicine, Rita Levi-Montalcini has been honoured with a commemorative stamp issued by Italy on 16 November 2013. In 2001, she was appointed Senator for Life. She lived a long life and in 2009 became the first Nobel Prize Laureate to reach 100 years. She died in Rome three years later. Levi-Montalcini suffered because of anti-Semitic laws promulgated by the fascist regime in1938. Things got even worse when Nazi forces took over vast areas of Italy. In her reminiscences she said: “If I had not been discriminated against or had not suffered persecution, I would never have received the Nobel Prize.” The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1986 was awarded jointly to Stanley Cohen and Rita Levi-Montalcini "for their discoveries of growth factors". . Interestingly enough, of the 199 individuals honoured with the Nobel Prize in Medicine, only 10 are women.

2013 COMO'S TEATRO SOCIALE, ITALY MINT NEVER HINGED
Country: ITALY
Condition: 2013 COMO'S TEATRO SOCIALE, ITALY MINT NEVER HINGED
Description: A Special Commemorative Stamp for Como’s Opera House Bicentenary was issued by Italy’s Posts on 28 October 2013. Verdi, Wagner and Como’s Teatro Sociale have a major date in common, the date of their birth: 1813. Built on the site of the ruins of a 1200 AD castle, the Teatro Sociale was inaugurated on 28 August 1813 with a double bill: Antonio Fonseca Portugal’s “Adriano in Siria”, and Giuseppe Mosca’ “I Pretendenti Delusi”. The Sociale is a particularly privileged opera house; in 1943, when La Scala, the Milanese opera temple, was tragically damaged by bombing, the Sociale became the new venue for La Scala’s opera productions. This added substantially to the already rich list of legendary opera singers who performed there: from Giuditta Pasta (in Rossini’s Tancredi) to Malibran, Tamagno, Gigli, Pertile, Schipa, Tagliabue, Del Monaco, Di Stefano, Kraus, Dal Monte, Simionato, Scotto, and Devia. Great conductors like Toscanini, Serafin, and Muti also performed here. Mascagni conducted his opera “Amica” generating such a craze for tickets that the police had to intervene. Stellar performances by Paganini and Liszt are also part of the Sociale’ history. Cosima Wagner, nee Liszt, was actually born in Como.
