FIRST DAY OF ISSUE POSTMARK - John Coakley Lettsom (1744-1815) founder of the Medical Society of London, UK., the Quaker physician -- regarded his West Indies birthplace (Little Jost Van Dyke, British Virgin Islands) and the New England states as integral parts of the colonial Empire, and described himself as Americanus. He had numerous friends in the American medical profession and was generous to them with books, plants and financial support. Lettsome was an entomologist. He wrote The naturalist's and traveler's companion, containing instructions for collecting and preserving objects of natural history and for promoting inquiries after human knowledge in general. London: E. and C. Dilly (1774)a much used work.
